"Therefore we were buried with him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we should walk in newness of life," Romans 6:4, NKJV.
We can live a new life through Jesus Christ. Notice in the above verse the words "walk in newness of Life." How can we receive this new life?
The new life begins by believing in the one who died for our sins and was raised again. This is the gospel of Jesus Christ. "Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures. And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the Scriptures," 1 Corinthians 15:3-4. This gospel is for all who will believe.
We begin the new life by burying the old life. That's what baptism is all about for the believer. We bury our old sins. We die through Christ to the old life. "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation, old things are passed away, behold, all things have become new," 2 Corinthians 5:17. We are free from the guilt, shame and condemnation of the past.
We live the new life through "the glory of the Father." This word glory refers to the presence of God at the resurrection of Christ. It is the same glory of the Father which gives the power to live the new life. What is the glory of the Father? It is the presence and the power of the Holy Spirit, also known as the Spirit of glory.
The Holy Spirit lives in every believer in Jesus Christ, Romans 8:9. He gives us the power to live the new life. He always wants to fill our lives with love, joy and peace, Galatians 5:22-23. We may quench and grieve the Holy Spirit through our sins. When we do, we should ask God to forgive and cleanse us, 1 John 1:9. He is faithful to forgive and cleanse us as we confess our sins. Then, we should ask that the Holy Spirit fill our lives with the love of God. He will! That's the essence of living the new life.
Father, fill me with your love to live a new life through Jesus Christ.
